It’s again that time of the year when we all love to frolic under the sun, on the beach of course, notwithstanding the scorching temperature. It’s summer. And it’s hot. Little wonder that cold comforts, particularly halo-halo, are selling like pancakes. It’s time to revisit old favorites or discover new halo-halo brands in the name of culinary exploration. The humidity drove us to discover Icebergs (the Harbour Square branch in Manila City) one fine weekend afternoon.
The official Icebergs history starts with the “small 5-table restaurant in Timog Avenue, Quezon City. It was a dessert place offering only a few items including halo-halo and mais con hielo.” We’ve noticed Icebergs for some time now but didn’t get the urge to go check it out.
We always had the impression that this is a dessert place, serving halo-halo, parfait, banana split and all things nice. What surprised us during our first visit is the fact that Icebergs also serves meals and a variety of food choices like pasta and pizza, appetizer and other menu items like lechon kawali and sisig.
But we’d rather focus on the halo-halo because the main meals are not really spectacular. More work needs to be done to better improve the main meals and, while we’re at it, the condition of the restaurant and training of its staff.
The halo-halo, on the other hand, can hold its own against rivals. Icebergs‘ halo-halo probably has the most ingredients (though we think we missed the milk). Generous serving, with more ingredients than the ice. The ice used for the halo-halo lies between Razon’s and Chowking — not too fine like Razon’s but not too coarse like Chowking. It’s surprising that the ice of Icebergs’ halo-halo easily mixes with the ingredients, which is good. Great, really. Indeed, while our preference is still Razon’s, we’re beginning to like Icebergs.
Don’t take our word for it, though. Try Icebergs, the halo-halo in particular. Then come back here and tell us what you think (we sincerely hope that by the time we go back, and we will definitely go back for the halo-halo, Icebergs has done something about the physical state of its restaurants and the service of its staff).
